This is one poet with a strong voice well worth your time. I first experienced Aisha's poetry in spoken word form nearly 10 years ago. Her work continues to amaze and impress.
I loved this. Powerful, musical, deep but also easily accessible- it warrants several readings. Some of the poems made me laugh out loud and others got me teary-eyed. The poet's soul really comes through when you read this book. You feel that she is speaking to you and about you. Keep on writing- you have a gift!
The Apparatus of A Warrior is an artful and intimate look into a young black woman's struggle to fit into a modern society where we are all inundated by media. This piece is designed to be thought provoking, and can remind one that feeling good about who you are is a matter of choice, your choice. The style is raw, matching the overall tone. "Recipe For Stardust", for example, makes excellent use of the familiar format of a recipe turned into prose. Very inventive!
The author pours her heart into her words. Each line is filled with emotion, and the pieces are arranged with a progression towards hope for the future. The varying structure mirroring the bumpy road that is life.
This is an excellent read. I look forward to this writer's future work.
