This novel, written first in 1955, is an awesome book full of interesting characters. I had purchased the first half of the novel at a used book store, not realizing that it was only the first half of the book. When I reached the end of the first half, I couldn't rest until I found a used book, in good shape, on Amazon, that contained both of the two parts. It was so good that I started reading it from the beginning again. The story involves many characters, focusing on those who were entered into the Tontine, which was a form of gambling, combined with a great income for those who outlived the others. The Tontine, an English tradition, cost each participant to spend 100 guineas to enter. There are many different categories, depending on the ages of the participants. When people entered die, the money goes to each remaining participant as an annuity; and as more people in each category die, the people still alive at the end can receive large amounts of money. The novel also narrates the lives of the main participants. It is a book containing romance, industrialism and the building of wealth by some with decline in others. Great Britain, Jamaica, South America, the United States, and other countries are involved in the lives of these people. It is interesting to me to read about Great Britain and all the other places and how life was like from 1815 on. Some of the British language and terms are puzzling, but they are so interesting, too. Suspense is built as people die, while others look forward to making money by continuing to live. The best parts of the novel are the very witty and funny ways that Thomas Costain infuses into this extremely readable book. You will find yourself laughing and appreciating his wit. It is a long, satisfying, entertaining novel that you will enjoy rereading often!

The Tontine Volume 2 Thomas B Costain 9789997408037 Books Reviews

I have been looking for this book for a long time and finally thought of . Since it's been out of print it was originally hard to find but and its vendors did it. The books (I got Volumes 1 & 2) were old but in good condition considering their age.
Exactly as promised
A difficult and very long book but a great story line and suspenseful until the very end.
This is a beautifully crafted story full of the times. I am eager to read vol. 2
Dickens meets Delderfield. The first two-thirds of this sprawling novel, which covers most of the 19th century, easily holds one's interest. However, the momentum begins to slow in the final third as the original characters begin to make room for their children and then their grandchildren and, yes, then their great-grandchildren. As another reviewer pointed out, a family-tree of characters would have been most helpful. If you're fond of multi-generational family sagas -- the sort of book you can really lose yourself in -- then "The Tontine" may be just what you're looking for. Be sure, however, that you have plenty of time to devote to it because it does tend to go on and on. And on.
I found this book by accident -- two volumes in a box of books to be thrown out.
It takes place beginning on the day the Duke of Wellington defeats Bonaparte at Waterloo, and follows the fortunes of two rival families through Regency and early Victorian England, along with their friends, lovers, enemies and many famous figures who have 'walk-on' parts.
The title comes from a type of lottery popular in England at the time, in which four of the young characters are enrolled by their parents, and the tontine is instrumental in each of their lives, right to the last.
It's worth the length, and provides an interesting view of the England of that time, its manners and mores.
Actually not one of the better Thomas B. Costain novels. More like the best thing he ever wrote. I read it back in the 60's when it was sold as one big, beautiful, bodacious read. It is a tome and I have remembered it well. That's how well Costain writes a book. He is or was the most readable novelist I have ever come across. His books were turned into movies and, sadly, sucked - the movies, not the books. If any one novel he wrote were a candidate to be turned into a franchise it is this one. I can imagine two or three films could be produced and they would be wonderful. There is much drama, adventure and a lot to be said about life and the mistakes we make living our lives and the consequences of those mistakes, and also the treasures of living a full one. Sadly, this book is out of print and you won't be able to pry it out of my cold dead hands as I plan to be buried with it. But - if you must, try "The Silver Chalice" or "Black Rose". Like I said......they are not their movies, so they are really, really good.
