The Bible admonishes the followers of Christ “as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.” In spite of this admonition, God’s people have not necessarily been noted for their quiet, meek, and peaceful approach to conflict. Rather, God’s testimony is often damaged beyond recovery by the confrontational attitude of those claiming to stand for the Lord. There is, however, a way to be right and be reasonable at the same time. This is the subject of this book Biblical Reasonableness.
In this follow up volume to Approved by God A Case for Modern Disestablishment, Drs. Townsend and Wright take us on a journey behind the scenes of the Ecclesiastical Law Center’s twenty plus years of working with churches and resolving difficult issues with government agencies. The book is sometimes somber, often humorous, but always instructive. A teaching manual on uncompromising reasonableness, that God has used to bring victory to His churches and glory to Himself.
“The Biblical doctrine of reasonableness is a much needed teaching in the church today. Dr. Wright and Dr. Townsend have done a great job in equipping pastors who want to stand for the Lordship of Jesus Christ over His church while maintaining a spirit of humility.”
Pastor Warren Campbell, Kaweah, California
“Proverbs 31-4 teaches that by keeping God’s law and commandments one can find ‘favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.’ This book sets forth a practical and peaceful way of dealing with bureaucrats that is in keeping with the examples found in the Bible. The authors show actual cases in Holy Scripture and in their personal experience in which God’s people have found ‘favour and good understanding’ in the sight of government officials without compromising a single Biblical conviction. This book is an invaluable resource for pastors and churches.” Pastor Ben Mott, Detroit, Michigan
So, how does the Ecclesiastical Law Center continue helping churches stem the tide against government bureaucracy and entanglements? ELC calls it “having a submissive spirit.” Not a submission to the government officials, but a submission to the Holy Spirit of God to be able to deal with each situation in a loving, joyful, and peaceful way. These three parts of the fruit of the Spirit make the way for the other six parts, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. This non-compromising, all-compassionate approach to resolve each church conflict distances the ELC from other similar legal organizations or ministries.
Drs. Wright and Townsend open their files and their hearts to give the reader a glimpse of what has made the ELC successful in God’s eyes. Their gentle approach to local church problems has helped not only pastors, but church members be able to deal with difficulties in a God-honoring way.
Approved by Man A Case for Biblical Reasonableness shows the Principles, the Practices, and the Precedent of being Biblically reasonable. It also tackles the Pragmatic tactics that others use to deal with similar situations in a carnal way.

This followup to "Approved by God: A Case for Modern Disestablishment" provides case examples of issues actually handled by the Ecclesiastical Law Center, a group of pastors who have helped other pastors in unincorporation and other issues of importance to God's church today. I am currently an assistant pastor having established and pastored a church that has followed Lordship principles, so I know they work. This is a very well-written book and outlines actual cases of churches following biblical principles of separation of church and state. This is a tremendous resource for the pastor who is on the fence about unincorporating and throwing off the shackles of government control. As someone who was there when First Baptist Church of Payson v. Fire Marshall happened, I can attest to the fact these are true stories that happened to real churches and that were resolved as stated in the book.
It was stories such as these that encouraged me to maintain the stand against incorporation in the church I helped organize and pastored and also encouraged me to join the fight as the Research Director of the Ecclesiastical Law Center several years ago. An unbelievable amount of time, work, study and prayer went into writing "Approved by Man: A Case for Biblical Reasonableness" and its predecessor "Approved by God: A Case for Modern Disestablishment.
This book is necessary for any pastor who has awakened to a proper understanding of Christ's authority in the church. Buy it, read it, and be encouraged to organize Christ's church properly because of it.
