Dreams and Sioux Nights edition by Richard Schwindt Literature Fiction eBooks

Venture north to Ontario with all five of these heartfelt and thought-provoking short stories. As a northern dweller myself in Alaska, I immediately found home in these pages. The subarctic setting leaps from the stories with exquisite detail- transporting you into the exact place the author wants you to go. Every sense of the scenery in these stories was so beautifully captured that even from a distance west, I found myself sitting right with each of these magnificant characters.

Dreams and Sioux Nights is a collection of five beautifully written short stories. Each different, but each just as touching as the last. As a foster mom, after a long day one of my favorite things to do is to curl away in the covers with a good book. Short stories are one of my favorite reads because I can get through them fairly quickly without taking a long break and losing site of the story amidst my busy schedule. A friend recommended this collection to me, and I'm so happy they did. The poetic essence of Richard Schwindt's flowed so smoothely and rythmically that I couldn't help feeling relaxed and a world apart as I read each of these stories.

Ontario truly is a one-of-a-kind city for those who've been blessed enough to visit it. It's filled with an array of people and stories- just as this book was. I really feel as though this specific collection of short stories provoked an atmospheric aura that held true to it's roots of Ontario. The diverse array of characters and the romantic undertones of their stories really did emmulate every detail of this great city.

Each of the five stories covered a different person, a different life, a different walk that was beautiful and worth reading entirely on its own. Combine all five stories, though, and you have a book that you will treasure and reread for quite some time. I specifically loved the enchanting romance of Melanie Moon- but as a typical hopeless romantic female it's really not unusual that I fell for that tale. In each story you'll find different emotions. Some provoke hope, others sadness, some mere fascination- and some total inspiration. But each story is totally worth sitting down for.

It's not rare that I fall madly in love with a short story collection (read through my reviews and you'll see how much I love them). But this one certainly earned it's five star review. I feel like this is a book people of all walks of life could enjoy and relate to. The writing style and pure genuine flow of the stories are reason enough to delve into this book. But the characters and the scenery will inevitably capture your heart and have you coming back for more. I've reread each of these stories a few times now, and each time they leaving me feeling just as fulfilled as the last. This truly is a short story collection that you can come back to time and time again.

Dreams and Sioux Nights edition by Richard Schwindt Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I loved all the stories in Dreams and Sioux Nights by Richard Schwindt. They reminded me of stories by Alice Munro and Jhumpa Lahiri, two of my favorites.

The one I liked best was "Dreams and Sioux Nights" because Devlin Feeny reminded me of a friend in a similar situation.
My favorite lines in this story

"Take me across the country and maybe I can jump into the Pacific and try to swim to China. Death is simply emptiness and I am an empty vessel."

and

"I fear I have been on this train a very long time. And that it’s going nowhere. Then some curiosity what does nowhere look like?"

This is a book this is meant to be read slowly and reflectively.

(I read a non-fiction book by Richard a few days ago - Emotional Recovery from Workplace Mobbing - and was pleasantly surprised at his felicity at writing fiction.)

Highly recommended.

(I downloaded a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.)
I've very much enjoyed Richard Schwindt's novels, and was curious to see if he could sustain my interest with a series of short stories. Once again … he over delivered. The stories are not light and fluffy, they are filled with imagery of places past and present and with characters you know and connect with.

One of the challenges of a short story is to create, place, time and characters with as few words as possible. To me, one of Schwindt's biggest talents is his ability to evoke a place, an era or a character with a few sentences or paragraphs.

"Dreams and Sioux Nights" has within its covers, five stories, all very different in subject matter and style. Each story grabs you and pulls you in quickly. Each story is complete. And, each story leaves you satisfied, because all that needed to be said, has been said.

The story that had the most impact on me was, "Tales of Unbearable Sadness." At first it puzzled me and then left me stunned. It took a few hours for me to realize, that stunned was exactly the point. You'll have to read it to see what I mean.

Of the five stories my two favorites were "Melanie Moon in Wasaga Beach," and "Joshua’s Jamaican Coffee." In "Melanie Moon," the author paints a picture of a young boy, his gaucheness, awkwardness and uncertainty, in an era that simply does not exist anymore. The ending left me with a smile on my face … and hope.

"Joshua’s Jamaican Coffee," is a story of Indian Residential School abuse that Canadians hear of all too often. It was up close and personal -- and though I don't like to think of myself as bloodthirsty … I really LIKED what happened. Sorry folks … NOT giving it away.

The stories are perfect reads … you'll be able to savor them on a lunch break or before bed. You will keep on thinking of them far past the reading of them! I highly recommend any and ALL of Richard Schwindt's novels and stories.
